Alfred William (Willy) Finch is born in Brussels (BE) on 28 November 1854 to British Parents, Joseph Finch (businessman) and Emma Finch (née Holach). He spent his youth in Ostende. When he was twenty-four he began studying for one year in Brussels at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts. On 28 October 1883 he became a founding member of Les XX, a group of twenty Belgian painters, designers and sculptors, who rebelled against the prevailing artistic standards and outmoded academism. He was impressed by the works of Georges Seurat and Paul Signac and changed his own painting style from a more realistic approach into a pointillistic style. In the following years, Finch became one of the leading representatives of his style in Belgium, along with Théo van Rysselberghe. During the early 1890s Finch switched careers from painting to pottery, upon the realization that he couldn't make a living by painting. In 1897, invited by count Louis Sparre, Finch moved to Porvoo, Finland, to head the Iris ceramics factory, and influenced the development of the local Jugendstil. After the factory was closed, Finch resumed his painting career. On his pottery he often uses slipdecorations. Finch died in Helsinki on 28 April 1930 (text Wikipedia).

De Belgisch/Britse kunstenaar Alfred William Finch volgt een opleiding aan de kunstacademie in Brussel. James Ensor is een vriend van Finch op de academie en samen worden zij lid van de kunstenaarsgroep Les Vingt in 1884. Met Georges Lemmen maakt Alfred Finch een studiereis naar Engeland. Finch behoort tot de eerste Belgische kunstenaars, die in navolging van Georges Seurat gaan werken in een divisionistische stijl. Alfred Finch schept niet alleen schilderijen en tekeningen in deze stijl, maar gaat deze techniek ook toepassen op keramiek. Via Anna Bloch wordt hij geïntroduceerd bij de aardewerkfabriek van vader Bloch. Tot 1893 experimenteert hij in de aardewerkfabriek in La Louvière. In 1897 vertrekt Alfred Finch op uitnodiging van Louis Sparre naar Finland, waar hij gaat werken in de Iris-fabriek in Borga. Vervolgens wordt hij keramiekleraar aan de Centrale School voor Decoratieve Kunsten in Helsinki. Finch is mede-oprichter van de Septem Groep. Door tentoonstellingen te organiseren introduceert Alfred Finch het impressionisme en het neo-impressionisme in Finland.
