Paulus van Leeuwen was educated at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. There he was influenced by his teacher Jan van der Vaart. Around 1980 he performed and/or designed several ceramic works for a short period of time. They are a teapot, two small ashtrays (black and white) and two large ashtrays (black and white). These (all in the collection of Museum Boijmans) were meant to be made in small series which succeeded with the ashtrays. Furthermore, one low scale made of slices in off-white that could not be made in series due to technical problems. The pieces were executed in stoneware and oxidizing fired between 1235 and 1250 gr.
