José Vermeersch is born in Bissegem (Belgium) in 1922. Vermeersch studied at the 'Koninklijke Academie' in Kortrijk from 1934 till 1941. Between 1941 and 1943 he visits the 'Nationaal Hoger Instituut' and 'Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten' in Antwerp. In 1945 and 1946 he continues his studies at the 'Nationaal Hoger Instituut', lessons in painting with Constant Permeke. He established in Bissegem in 1948 and moved to Heule in 1951. For his daily income he starts producing tiles for fireplaces. In 1954 he starts the company b.v.b.a. TEGELS. He joins lessons in painting and decoration during the evening at the 'Vrij Technisch Instituut' in Roeselare. In 1968 he changed completely his style of painting and starts also sculpture. From 1969 onwards he has focused on sculpture both in bronze and in ceramic. In 1985 he has built an kiln with open fire in Lendelede. José Vermeersch passed away in Lendelede on December 13, 1997.
