This fine object was purchased by its first owners from Galerie Loes & Reinier International Ceramics in Deventer in 2020. 1) Galerie’s explanation of the Terra Sigillata decor: ‘The technique of sealed earth, also known as terra sigillata, is characterised by the vivid craquelé visible on the sherd. The secret is hidden in the covering of the turned pot with a refined purified clay silt, obtained by an almost chemical process of sieving and sedimentation. Mathieu fires his work in the wood-fired kiln all at once without firing biscuit first. He fires his work at a temperature of 980 degrees C. During the firing process, perfect vitrification is achieved with the right clay as a base. The sludge fuses with the surface of the carefully polished piece. Mathieu carefully selects his clay to use to turn the pot and the clay to serve as sludge. The refining process takes several days to several weeks; the clay is diluted with rainwater, sieved and clarified in a long process of settling and drying. The longer the settling, the finer the object vitrifies. The black of the smoke firing draws networks of craquelé in an accidental play of lines.’ rechte kom, op de schijf gedraaid, vlakke bodem, terra sigillata decor 1), hoogte 7 cm, diameter 18,5 cm, gedateerd en gesigneerd, 2019.
