    Tilepainting depicting the Grote Zeilroede in Makkum

    Tilepainting depicting a skutsje (freight sailing boat ) in the Grote Zeilroede in front of the Gleibakkerij of Royal Tichelaar in Makkum. In the back the tower of The Waag is visible; 4 x 5 tiles in original oak frame, Tegel- en Plateelbakkerij van de Fa. Gebroeders Tichelaar, Makkum, painter is Jan Romke Steensma (Purmerend 1887-Sneek 1967), about 1920. This tilepicture is mounted on a MDF panel and replaced in its original frame. Some tiles have been restored in the restoration department of Royal Tichelaar. See the second picture to learn which tiles were broken or damaged (picture courtesy Dr. Johan Kamermans). Remark: the tilepainting is most probabely painted after a drawing by Jacobus ten Zweege.
