Anne van der Waerden is born February, 8th 1945 in Amsterdam. 1962-1966 Instituut voor Kunstnijverheidsonderwijs, Amsterdam (Gerrit Rietveld Academie). Pupil of Theo Dobbelmann. 1965-1972 studio in Amsterdam. About 1966 first exhibition. 1972 she moves to Vianen. 1982 travels to Peru. 1995-1996 for a short periode studio in Driebergen-Rijsenburg. Around 1985 co-production with Kees Hoogendam. Anne van der Waerden lives nowadays in Amsterdam. For search: see also Anne Wortel-van der Waerden.

Anne generally creates large, monumental works in clay; in addition, at the invitation of the Royal Leerdam Glassworks, she has also devoted herself to designing glass, which presents a different set of specific challenges. “Her pottery and vase sculptures are free-form pieces with beautiful monochrome (lithium-zinc-based) glazes, with a preference for earthy and mossy colours. They possess a strongly evocative atmosphere. The pottery is thrown or hand-formed, treated with oxides, a layer of engobe and a transparent glaze. The pieces are fired in an electric kiln at up to 1045 degrees C. Her work is held in many leading ceramics collections both at home and abroad.

In 2023, Anne said in an interview in COLLECT: “In sculpture, the emphasis is generally placed on the relationship between the object and the space surrounding it. My ceramics, on the other hand, focus on the relationship between the object and its interior space. For me, it is about that inner space, that void. I also enjoy integrating contrasts in form and colour. For instance, I sought ways to move from square to round, from dark to light, and from inside to outside.”
