What can captivate a person in life? In my case, it has been ceramics since my early childhood. Creating something from a slab of clay. In earlier times this was done out of pure necessity: shaping cooking pots for use over an open fire, or jars for storing oils. In Dutch domestic culture, the ingenuity of the faience technique played an important role in keeping moisture out of homes. In my first professional life, I explored this field with great passion.
When I founded Capriolus Contemporary Ceramics together with my wife Ineke in the remarkable year 2000, our interest in and knowledge of the many possibilities of ceramics had already expanded enormously. This was due in no small part to my work as a ceramics valuer in art appraisal programmes such as Schatgraven from Omroep Gelderland and De Utrechtse Schatkamer from RTV Utrecht. Over the past twenty years, countless common and more exceptional objects have passed through our hands. It is a joy to share knowledge and to use that knowledge in finding remarkable objects for our gallery — a treasure chamber for donors and other passionate enthusiasts.
With our gallery we specialise in international post-war unique ceramics. We are devoted to this period because the years 1960–2000 represent an exceptional flourishing of free ceramics.
