Jean-Francois (Jan) Cobbaert is born in Heverlee (BE) on June, 24 1909. Since the age of fifteen, he is joining the studio of Jacques Charlier (1899-1964) in Leuven once a week. From 1923 till 1926 Jan is visiting the 'Stedelijke Akademie voor Schone Kunsten', department drawing and painting. He continues with the study Art History at the Leuven Catholic University and followed by the study is Archeology and Art History at the 'Hoger Instituut' in Bruxelles. Cobbaert becomes a painter around 1935. In 1950 he get in touch with the CoBrA movement. After World War II he travels to Paris to learn more about ceramics with Pierre Caille and Olivier Strebelle and later in 1955-56 with Francis Duffey in Bruxelles. In 1962 he receives a diplome at the International Exhibition of Contemporary Ceramics in Prague. But the main oeuvre of the artist is painting and drawing.
