Walter Keeler's work has two distinct styles: salt-glazed stoneware and whieldon-glazed earthenware. The salt-glazed pieces are more austere, moderated by degrees of sensuality in the making and in the fired quality of the pots but always reaching back into the tradition of vessel making (both metal and clay) for inspiration. Through using earthenware clay he draws on historical ideas, colours, forms and culture from eighteenth century English Staffordshire pottery. Walter Keeler has been potting for forty years and still remains dynamic and is innovative in his use and manipulation of clay with a jauntiness of line that comes from confidence and experience.
