Claude Varlan is born in 1940. He visits the École des Métiers d’Art in Paris, next he is working in various workshops, f.e. with André Normand in Saint-Amand-en-Puisaye, with Palley and with Coville. In 1974 he sets up his first own studio in Chaillac, together with Brigitte Pénicaud. Later a new studio is set up in Places (North in the Limousin). Since about 2000 he stopped. Claude Varlan passed awau July 14, 2021

His woodfired vessels are always decorated with paint. In the beginning in a Japonistic style, later in all kind of decorations in an improvised style, always surprising. This decoration is both with engobes and glazes.  

Signature is a painted cross
